Under direction, supervises, monitors, and coordinates personnel, daily operation and maintenance activities of the Town's Parks & Recreation Department, Parks Maintenance division.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Establishes a professional relationship with vendors to ensure contract compliance and that the vendor’s performance is up to Town of Oro Valley’s codes and standards.
  • Establishes a professional, courteous and respectful relationship with park patrons.
  • Initiates preventive maintenance.
  • Meets on a regular basis with the Parks Superintendent to discuss any pertinent issues, review stated goals and the general state of the parks.
  • Meets with the Park Monitors on a regular basis to provide specific information, provide insights into their daily routines and to listen to their specific procedural or park patron experiences.
  • Monitors parks and other facilities to identify and correct safety hazards or concerns.
  • Operates a personal computer to produce and distribute correspondence, prepare necessary reports, documents, purchase requisitions, financial data, databases, etc.
  • Prepares the annual budget in conjunction with the Parks Superintendent and monitors operating budgets.
  • Promotes the goals and objectives of the Parks & Recreation Department through public contact.
  • Proposes facility improvements and capital equipment and participates in long-range development.
  • Provides a continual process of service and maintenance improvement.
  • Resolves complaints or problems regarding the maintenance of parks and other assigned facilities.
  • Reviews all field and Ramada reservations as well as any upcoming special events and communicates need to park maintenance team.
  • Estimates, orders, and schedules supplies and equipment necessary to complete the work in accordance with the Town of Oro Valley’s finance department requirements and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate inventory records and ensures internal control of resources.
  • Operates hand tools, power tools, vehicles and other machinery related to park maintenance.
  • Performs technically skilled work in the cultivation of grass, trees, and other plants, and in the control of fungi, weeds, insects, and rodents.
  • Supervises the day-to-day activities including communicating, scheduling work, training, evaluating, and motivating staff.
  • Ensures Parks Maintenance Division staff follow maintenance guidelines and standards.
  • Assists with personnel actions such as selection, promotion, discipline, and evaluations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
 

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written communication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines and follow up on work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of ground maintenance including irrigation, sports field maintenance, landscape maintenance, playground maintenance and building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of management and/or supervision principles and possession of strong leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety guidelines.
  • Knowledge of park maintenance and beautification methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Town and Department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in prioritizing and monitoring park maintenance activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • An associate degree from an accredited college or university in Parks Management, Horticulture, Resources Management, Landscape Horticulture or a closely related field.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in landscaping, irrigation, turf landscape management, repair of parks, and large outdoor athletic complexes.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must possess or be able to acquire a Certified Pesticide Applicator license for the State of Arizona within six months.
  • Ability to pass NRPA’s Certified Playground Safety Inspector program within six months.
  • Must possess a valid Class D Arizona driver license upon the first day of employment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

     
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Possess a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification. 
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
 
  • Work is performed in an outdoor environment.
  • Regular, daily attendance is an essential function for this position.
